Pregame notes for the first spring training game (FINALLY!)

George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, FL

Welcome to Spring Training baseball Yankees fans!!!

We have been waiting for this day since the last out of the World Series. (some of us since the last out of the Yankees season back in early October)

The New York Yankees 115th season is about to begin but before it officially does, Spring Training comes first in order to make the final touches on the roster. For the last few years Spring Training has not been something to be excited about however this year, with the Yankees having a wave of young players with tremendous potential like Gleyber Torres, Clint Frazier, Justus Sheffield, Jorge Mateo and others, this years Spring Training will be very interesting and exciting to see who makes some noise and who needs more work. For the rest of Spring Training, we will get a preview of what the future holds for the New York Yankees.

Now on to the game!!

Todays Starting Pitcher: Bryan Mitchell

For todays game, the Yankees chose to go with Bryan Mitchell to start. With the starting rotation consisting of only Tanaka, Sabathia, and Pineda, the Yankees are starting early on seeing who is going to join them at the back end. As I said before, I think he definitely deserves to get a good look considering what he showed last season in his limited time and if it doesn’t work out he could still be a very good option in the bullpen for some long relief.

Todays Lineup:

  1. Gardner CF
  2. Gregorius SS
  3. Sanchez C
  4. Holliday DH
  5. Bird 1B
  6. Castro 2B
  7. Headley 3B
  8. Hicks LF
  9. Judge RF

Girardi said he wanted the frontline lineup out on the field for todays opener, with the exception of Jacoby Ellsbury, who reported late to Spring Training in order to be home for the birth of his daughter. He also said, that he plans to give a lot of reps to the up-and- coming players which is very exciting to hear. I personally am very interested to see Gleyber Torres and Jorge Mateo because of the great things that we have heard about them. I know the last time the Yankees had a wave of young prospects were in the 90’s but I was too young to remember it, so this is the first time for me that the Yankees are building from within instead of signing free agents every year. I am glad the Yankees decided to go in this direction and I can’t wait for how the next couple of years are going to play out.
